Dos Rios Grand Junction

Dos Rios Grand Junction Riverfront Trail sign

I’ve been watching the Dos Rios Grand Junction area develop over the years. We recently parked at Dos Rios Park (near the new Starbucks) and walked west on the Colorado Riverfront Trail. Here are photos of our experience. If you are a Facebook user, you can “like and follow” Dos Rios Grand Junction on Facebook to see the development progress and learn about upcoming events and opportunities.

Dos Rios Park

Dos Rios Park offers kids and families a water break at the Dos Rios Splash Pad where you can turn on and off the water yourself in 10-minute increments. There’s a cool bike park for riders to home their skills. A waterfront park isn’t complete without playground equipment and picnic shelters offering shade and restrooms. Another unique feature in the Dos Rios Grand Junction area there is a large beach on the Colorado River, officially called Playa Dos Rios because Playa means beach in Spanish.

The Riverfront at Dos Rios

The city of Grand Junction explains the area this way… “It is a 58-acre mixed-use development in the heart of the City of Grand Junction. The project consists of 15.8 acres of parks and open space, 9.5 acres for light industrial/commercial, and 10.2 acres for mixed-use development. With unparalleled access to the river, trail systems, green space and downtown, the City envisions this area as a vibrant neighborhood serving as a home, workplace, and play place for artisans, entrepreneurs, and innovators.”

Here’s a photo of the development map that is posted along the Riverfront Trail.

The Confluence Center of Colorado

As of June 2025, you can see the construction started for The Confluence Center of Colorado at Dos Rios, a hub for conservation, outdoor education, and land stewardship. This building is shared with six nonprofit organizations, including EUREKA McConnell Science Museum, RiversEdge West, One Riverfront, Colorado National Monument Association, Colorado West Land Trust, and the Colorado Canyons Association. “The Confluence Center of Colorado brings together mission-focused, nonpolitical organizations working at the confluence of land and water science, education, agriculture, and stewardship to magnify our impact and ensure the longevity of our natural resources for future generations. By bringing these resources under one roof, the Confluence Center will amplify our ability to protect natural resources and engage the next generation.” Read more on The Confluence Center website.

Colorado Riverfront Trail

The Riverfront Trail is 28 miles of paved, and mostly connected paths, between Loma, Fruita, Grand Junction, and Palisade. I say “mostly” because to get from Grand Junction to Palisade, it requires you to ride on the road vs a designated trail. Riverside Trail gives walkers and riders access to so many parks, open space, and bathrooms as well as commercial experiences like breweries, the Western Colorado Botanical Gardens, Las Colonias Amphitheater, a zipline over the Colorado river and more. You can read the Visit Grand Junction website to learn more about the Colorado Riverfront Trail.

Dos Rios Park and 45 minutes west

We started at the Dos Rios Park and we walked for 45 minutes, heading West. We were very impressed with the condition of the concrete trail and the cool workout equipment along the way. Everyone was very nice along the trail and bikers announced themselves when they passed us on the left. Some just rung their bike bells.

We saw a couple groups going down the Colorado River in their kayaks or SUPS. We went in the morning at the end of June. It was a sunny 90-degree day and we wanted to walk before it got too hot. There were several picnic tables along the route where you could stop for a picnic.

About halfway on our adventure, we discovered a very shaded city park adjacent to a neighborhood, called Riverside Park. It’s between Colorado and Ute Avenues. Even the new basketball court was partially shaded in the morning! We discovered there are a few mini parking areas along the trail, some in the shade. We didn’t quite make it all the way to the Audubon Nature Preserve, Connected Lakes and James M. Robb State Park. There is so much to see along the trail!

Bike Rentals

Next time, we plan to rent electric bikes from Colorado Electric Bikes located on Riverside Parkway and 27 ½ Road near Las Colonias and Camp Eddy. That way we can go further and feel the fresh breeze to keep us cool! There are bike rental shops in Fruita, Grand Junction, and Palisade. You don’t need to own a bike to experience biking on area trails. Just rent one when you want it. Then you don’t need to worry about storing it and maintenance. One day you can rent an e-bike, the next a mountain bike, and explore the miles and miles of mountain biking trails. Read my post about Mountain Biking in Grand Junction.

If you do want to bike the Riverfront Trail, read my post about the Cons of Living in Grand Junction. We did see 2 people walking their bikes on the trail during our adventure. One lady had a flat tire. We warn readers about goat heads on the trail. Read the post about how to protect your bike tires.

Dos Rios Housing

Because of this website, I worked with a new buyer client who wanted to move to Grand Junction from New Jersey. He was ready for a lifestyle change. He is an avid biker, and his requirement was to be able to hope on his bike from his front door and ride for 20 miles or more. He didn’t want to get in his car and drive to a trailhead to start biking. He found a town home in Dos Rios and loves the new amenities that are being added to the area. Ask me about buying new construction in this area before you reach out to any builders directly. I have some insight I want to share with you.

Overall, we loved walking on the Riverfront Trail and discovering more about Dos Rios Grand Junction in person. I have already gone back to walk the same trail section again because we enjoyed it so much. We are thankful for the City of Grand Junction and their vision in reinventing this section along our prized Colorado River.
