The 10-Day Grand Junction, Colorado Challenge

Answering the question…

Is It the Biggest Hidden Gem in America?

10-Day Grand Junction Challenge could she see herself living here image of Megan sitting on rock looking out over the Grand Junction valley

Megan Jirele, an independent journalist and writer, accepted my challenge to spend 10 days in Grand Junction, Colorado, a place she knew virtually nothing about. Her assignment? Experience the area with fresh eyes, document her discoveries, and independently assess whether I could make the case that it was the biggest hidden gem in America.

Over 10 days, Megan explored Grand Junction and the surrounding Grand Valley, experienced a taste of everyday life, met the people who make this community special, and ventured far into Grand Junction’s backyard to fully understand life on Colorado’s Western Slope.

My challenge was to make the case. Hers was to decide for herself whether I could prove it. But somewhere along the way, the challenge became about more than Grand Junction. It became an opportunity for Megan to discover something about the place, the possibility of calling it home, and perhaps even herself.
